I bitterly regret trusting the care of my dog to Wilson Vets. They did not treat her according to my concerns nor offer appropriate advice, as a result she was allowed to deteriorate, suffer and die. My Fit and otherwise healthy spaniel, Freya, had two consultations at Wilson Vets last September as she had stopped eating normally/at all. I strongly suspected that she had accidentally swallowed burdock burr/s when removing them from her fur. She had also been sick and not passed the coarse grass that I knew she had eaten immediately after the burr incident (three days before first consult, five before second). Freya not eating was a huge ‘red flag’ to me as I had never known her refuse food before having always been a greedy dog. By the second consultation I was also concerned that she was noticeably starting to lose form. I believe my concerns were ignored or disregarded by both vets that we saw – the possibility of a foreign body is not even mentioned in Freya’s clinical notes from either consultation. Freya was treated for pain and sickness at both consultations. At the second consultation, the vet suggested they could do bloods or abdominal scan then asked what I thought without giving me any further information. I said I would lean towards a scan, I clearly stated again that I thought Freya had swallowed something that was causing a block. The vet nodded at this but was clearly in favour of bloods, unfortunately I trusted her. I was given no advice regarding possible symptoms of foreign bodies (a number of which Freya had and/or developed). I was advised to offer Freya a bland diet at both consultations and to monitor her for nausea after the second. Freya was given a Bupredine injection for pain relief at the second consultation, this created difficulty in monitoring her condition. I was not told that it can have a sedative effect in some dogs (she was near-comatose for the rest of the day), nor was I given accurate information about the duration of its effect (6-8 hours, not 24 hours as I understood from the consultation). I believe the second vet missed further opportunities during two subsequent phone calls to identify that Freya’s condition was deteriorating. Freya was very ill by the time she was scanned (seven days after I suspected she had swallowed the burrs), she died a few hours later. Her ultrasound scan notes state that there was “high suspicion of fb in stomach” and “severe enteritis”. A quick google search (I will forever regret not doing this at the time) shows that “dogs can die from swallowing a foreign body within 3 – 7 days”, the importance of early diagnostics and treatment and that burrs can “in the worst case, cause intestinal blockage”. I have waited to review Wilson Vets as I thought it fair to go through their complaints procedure, I also tried mediation through VCMS. Maybe Wilson Vets have improved in the meantime but their Complaints Manager’s statement that “I am confident we approached Freya’s case appropriately” gives me no confidence. I would certainly never trust Wilson Vets with any animal I cared for again.

We have used Wilson’s for nearly 4 years and we would never go anywhere else. We have been for minor and major reasons and every time our dog is treated with such love and kindness. They’ve saved his life more than once (literally) through knowledge and care so we owe them everything. They aren’t the closest vets to us by any means but I’d travel double the distance to ensure he gets the high quality of care that he does at Wilson’s!

I have a range of pets and have chosen Wilsons as my veterinary practice, and I can honestly say my experiences have always been overwhelmingly positive. The reception team are consistently warm, friendly, helpful, and professional, which makes every visit feel welcoming. Over time, I’ve visited for routine check-ups, vaccinations, general queries, and more recently for support with my elderly dog, who sadly had to be put to sleep. During this difficult period, the vets were incredibly compassionate, knowledgeable, and supportive. They took the time to explain all options clearly and showed genuine kindness throughout. I occasionally come across negative comments online, but in all my visits, I have only ever had positive experiences. I also feel reassured knowing they offer out-of-hours emergency care and home visit options, which adds an extra level of trust and convenience. While some people mention pricing, I believe it’s important to recognise the realities of running a veterinary practice. Providing high-quality care, facilities, and staff comes at a cost, and this is something anyone taking on a pet should be prepared for. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Wilsons to others.

I have been with Wilson’s vets for over 20 years. They were recommended by a bullmastiff breeder as Paul had a very good reputation and my first visit didn’t disappoint. I now travel 17 miles to stay with them. The staff are so lovely and caring they are the best vets around. Thank you Wilson’s vets

I had to take my dog, Gus, to the emergency out-of-hours service, where he unfortunately needed to stay in for two nights. The care he received throughout his stay was absolutely exceptional. Every vet and member of the nursing team showed genuine empathy, compassion, and professionalism. I was kept fully updated on Gus’s condition and was encouraged to call at any time if I was worried. Any questions I had were answered with patience and reassurance, and I always came away from conversations feeling comforted and informed. They also kindly allowed me to visit Gus during his stay, which meant a great deal to me during such a stressful time. I cannot thank the team enough for their outstanding care and support, and I would highly recommend them to anyone needing emergency veterinary care.

Sadly on 12th December our beloved house rabbit Dusty passed over the rainbow bridge. I would like to thank all of the staff for there compassion and care they gave to both Dusty and our family. Yesterday we received a lovely sympathy card and Forget Me Not seeds through the post, what a lovely kind gesture which gave us comfort during this sad time. I would not hesitate to recommend Wilson’s (Bishop Auckland & Spennymoor). Thank you all 💔

Disappointed this time. These vets have always been awesome but our last appointment was a letdown, possibly due to the vet...our nurse Helen was awesome as always. Our girl Molly was spayed in July and her pre op bloods came back with slightly high kidney levels. We then spoke to Hugh, fantastic vet who asked for a urine test which we did and it was fine. Hugh suggested at the time that we left it 3 months and did an SDMA blood test to be 100% sure her kidneys are ok. We booked this in last week and saw.a different vet called Jeremy. Firstly he sedated our girl with ketamine and she didn't recover until 19hrs later. She couldn't walk and was dehydrated to the point I had to feed her water with a syringe...I did call the surgery and Jeremy wasn't very helpful tbh... We were charged immediately for 3 blood tests and told they would be back maybe the following day . When I called the next day to check he hadn't even sent the bloods off...said he was waiting on a urine sample. He knew Molly wasn't compus mental yet...how can you get a urine test from a dog that can't even stand up to pee. We were then called the next day, Saturday, and told bloods would be in that afternoon. They emailed over one little test...NOT the SDMA that was ordered. Jeremy called and was talking away as if Molly already had kidney problems...he hadn't even read the notes and seen Hughs comments or the previous urine test results. He talked over me so fast that I had to keep interrupting him and asking to speak! I asked where the sdma results were and there was a long silence....he said he would call and chase them . The fact was...as I found out Monday morning was that he hadn't even ordered them! I was told when I called that the nurse has called and ordered 2 more tests from the outside lab that morning...that maybe we would get them Tuesday! Waiting is not ideal when you have a dog that's poorly and could have kidney issues...you worry and we trusted our vets to carry our the tests we had been charged for. We have never had an issue with wilsons before until Jeremy was assigned to our case.... Hoping the bloods haven't been lost as Molly has to be sedated for any vet visits. Please make sure that if your vet is Jeremy that he a) reads your dogs notes and b) orders the tests you are charged for. Not happy! On top of this....Molly should never have had ketamine as she has an eye condition

My sister uses Wilson’s vets in Spennymoor and duly informed I of a branch in Bishop Auckland of which I duly visited with my seizure medical alert dog. The appointment wasn’t rushed and duly explained all to I of which I came away feeling happy for Lola & I thanking you.
