How the flock space calculator works.

Enter the type of bird and the size of your flock. The calculator gives you a rough starting point for indoor housing, a secure outdoor run, feeders and drinkers. It is intended for domestic flocks of ducks, chickens, geese and quail. The result is not a legal limit or a guarantee that the setup meets every bird’s welfare needs.

Space is only one part of a good setup. Birds also need dry shelter, fresh air without draughts, shade, protection from predators, clean bedding, suitable flooring and enough food and water for every bird. Ducks and geese need water deep enough to clean their heads and nostrils.

How to use the estimate

  • Use the indoor figure as a starting point for a night shelter or bad-weather housing, and provide more space where you can.
  • Use the run figure for a secure outdoor area. Birds need enough room to move, forage and get away from one another.
  • Round the number of feeders and drinkers up. Spread them out so quieter birds cannot be kept away by more dominant flock mates.
  • Check the registration, welfare and disease-control rules for your part of the UK before getting birds, and keep up with current bird flu guidance.

Signs that the setup needs attention

Review the space and layout if birds are bullying or feather pecking, standing in wet bedding, being kept away from food or water, losing condition, limping or left without shelter. If you notice signs of illness, contact a vet and follow current government advice on reporting disease.

Is this a legal stocking-density calculator?

No. It gives a rough starting point for a domestic flock. Registration, welfare and disease-control rules vary across the UK and can change, so check current official guidance before getting birds.

Can I keep fewer water points if birds free range?

Not usually. Birds need clean drinking water wherever they spend time. Ducks also need water deep enough to dip their heads and clean their nostrils.

Why do geese need more space than chickens?

Geese are bigger than chickens and need room to walk, graze and move away from one another comfortably.

What should I do before buying birds?

Plan the housing and budget for feed, bedding and veterinary care. Check registration and local rules, find a vet who treats birds, and decide how you would protect the flock during a disease outbreak.
