Puppy and kitten vet costs calculator

See what a new puppy or kitten typically costs at the vet in the first year and each year after, from the prices UK practices publish.

Typical vet costs

First year

Vaccination course
£100 most £88–£120
Spay
£460 most £416–£490
Typical total
£560

Each year after

Annual booster
£75 most £65–£83

If your pet needs another appointment

Consultation
£61 most £55–£66

Vaccination appointments usually include a health check, so a consultation isn’t in the totals.

How to use it

How the vet costs calculator works

Every figure comes from the prices UK vet practices publish on their own websites, collected and checked by Vet Verified. For each item we show the typical price, the median of all the practices we have, and the range the middle half of practices charge.

Choose your pet and the care you expect in the first year. The calculator adds up the typical prices for the vaccination course, neutering and microchipping, then the yearly booster. Vaccination appointments usually include a health check, so we show the price of a separate consultation alongside rather than adding it in. It also shows what a monthly health plan typically costs, so you can compare.

Reading the totals

  • Totals add typical prices together. Your practice may be cheaper or dearer for each item, so use them to budget, not as a quote.
  • Neutering prices for dogs depend on size, and some practices charge more for bitches in season or overweight dogs.
  • Breeders must microchip puppies before they go to new homes, so you may not need to pay for it.
  • The totals don’t include flea and worm treatment, insurance, food, or treatment if your pet becomes ill or injured.

Budgeting for the unexpected

Routine care is the predictable part. Illness and accidents can cost hundreds or thousands of pounds, so consider pet insurance or savings set aside for vet bills before you need them.

Common questions

How much does a puppy cost at the vet in the first year?

Routine care in the first year usually means a vaccination course, which includes health checks, and, if you choose, neutering and microchipping. Use the calculator for today’s typical UK prices for each, and a total for your dog’s size.

Are pet health plans worth it?

A health plan spreads routine costs, such as vaccinations, flea and worm treatment and check-ups, into a monthly payment, often with discounts. Compare the plan’s yearly cost with the items you would actually use.

Where do the prices come from?

From the price lists UK practices publish online. We show a figure only when we have prices from enough practices, and update them as practices change their prices.
