Pigs and Sunburn: Essential Information for Owners
Pigs, especially those with lighter skin, are highly susceptible to sunburn due to their sparse hair and pale skin. Sunburn can cause severe discomfort and even health issues if not addressed. Pigs such as Landrace and Large White breeds, young piglets, and hairless varieties are at increased risk. Commonly affected areas include the ears, back, and sides. Protect pigs by providing shade, mud wallows, and animal-safe sunscreens, and limiting their sun exposure during peak UV hours. Early treatment of sunburn involves moving pigs to shaded areas, cooling their skin, and seeking veterinary advice for severe cases. Long-term sun exposure can lead to skin cancers, secondary infections, and heatstroke. Pet pig owners should be vigilant about sun safety, using UV-protective measures as necessary.
